Preparing for Your Appointment & Ongoing Care

What should I bring to my first appointment

1

For your first appointment, please bring any relevant referral letters or Mental Health Care Plans from your GP, any previous psychological or medical reports if available, and your Medicare card and private health insurance details if applicable. It can also be helpful to bring a brief written summary of your main concerns if you find this easier than explaining verbally.

How long is a typical consultation?

2

Initial appointments are generally longer than follow-up sessions, often around 50–60 minutes, to allow time for a thorough assessment. Follow-up sessions are either 50 minutes or 30 minutes in duration. Please confirm appointment length and fees when you book.

Should parents attend the first appointment with their teenager?

3

This depends on the young person's age and the nature of the concern. For younger adolescents, it is usually helpful for a parent or carer to attend at least part of the first session. For older teenagers, an individual appointment may be more appropriate. Please discuss this with the practice when booking.

Is what I share with Michael confidential?

4

Yes. Like all registered psychologists, Michael is bound by strict professional confidentiality. Information shared in sessions will not be disclosed without your consent, except in circumstances where there is a legal obligation to do so — for example, if there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others. Michael will explain confidentiality clearly at the beginning of your first appointment.

What is the cancellation policy?

5

What if I need to reschedule?

6

How many sessions will I need?

7

With your consent, Michael will, in some cases, communicate with your GP, paediatrician, school counsellor, or other relevant professionals. Coordinated care often leads to better outcomes, particularly for young people.

Will Michael liaise with my GP, school, or other treating professionals?

8

If at any point it becomes clear that a different level or type of care is needed — such as a psychiatric assessment, inpatient support, or specialist intervention — Michael will discuss this openly and assist with referral to the appropriate service.

What if my child needs a higher level of care than Michael can provide?

9

If you or your child are experiencing a mental health emergency, please call 000 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department. You can also contact Lifeline on 13 11 14, Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, or headspace on 1800 650 890. Please do not wait for a scheduled appointment if you are concerned about immediate safety

Can Michael tailor his presentation to our conference theme?

3

Yes, and this is something we take seriously. Michael works with organisers in advance to understand the conference theme, delegate profile, and any specific issues or priorities you'd like addressed. The goal is always a presentation that feels native to your event — not a generic off-the-shelf talk.

How long does Michael typically present for at conferences?

5

Does Michael offer a pre-conference media opportunity or delegate Q&A?

6

Each practice has its own cancellation policy. Please ask about this at the time of booking. As a general guide, at least 24–48 hours notice is typically required to avoid a cancellation fee. Late cancellations and missed appointments may be charged at the full session rate, as this time has been reserved specifically for you.

Can we use footage or photography of Michael's presentation for post-event content?

7

We're happy to provisionally hold a date for a short period while you confirm internally. Please contact us as early as possible as Michael's conference calendar — particularly for peak season events — fills well in advance.

How do we hold a date while we finalise our budget or program?

8

This varies considerably depending on the individual and the nature of their concerns. Some people benefit from a brief focused intervention over a few sessions; others benefit from more extended support. Michael will discuss his initial recommendations with you following the assessment and will review progress with you as treatment continues.

We'll provide a full technical and logistics brief once a booking is confirmed. Generally, Michael requires a lapel or headset microphone, a standard AV setup with HDMI connectivity, and a brief pre-event call with the organiser or MC to align on flow and introductions. We aim to make the process as smooth as possible for your team.

Yes, on request. Michael is happy to participate in pre-conference media activity, conduct a post-keynote delegate Q&A, or take part in a meet-and-greet where the program allows. Please discuss this at the time of booking.

Usage of recordings and photography is discussed and agreed as part of the booking process. We are generally supportive of reasonable post-event content use and will confirm parameters in writing.

Is Michael available for media comment?

What topics does Michael regularly comment on in the media?

2

Can Michael provide expert quotes or written commentary for articles?

3

Screen time and social media, youth mental health and suicide prevention, cyberbullying, vaping and substance use among young people, parenting challenges, school refusal, anxiety, resilience, and emerging research in adolescent development.
